Title : VOODOO DRAGON RISING
Artist : Z STARR
Label : VOODOO DRAGON RECORDS
Format : CD
Ah joy of joys, that rare moment of discovering the early talents of a new artist. The one in mind here being Z star- Z’s first album is the domain of a multi instrumentalist who sings plays and produces all of the tracks herself.
This album was released in 2000 and is an amazing release. The vibe is of a streetwise songwriter whose lyrics pull no punches and the music and production sits alongside accordingly "I’m a ruff gal.” she proudly intones. The overall sound quality and production for an album without an Oasis style budget is remarkable as Z fuses blues dub and hip hop into strong song based material with the occasional ballad thrown in .
If this serves as a tantalising glimpse of what she is able to do live then I will be at the front. “Murder, murder, murder hey.” Playing regularly in London with a new album pending. Smart Monkey

Title : HARD GRIND
Artist : LITTLE AXE
Label : ON U SOUND
Format : CD
Skip Mcdonalds Little Axe produce the most futuristic and at the same time psychedelic blues tunes you're ever likely to come across. On 'Hard Grind' the Ex sugar Hill Gang / Tackhead & long time 'On U Sound' guitarist teams up with On U head honcho Adrian Sherwood to bring us the latest album from Little Axe. With Sherwood sharing the writing credits on all but the opening track, this must be the most dub friendly of blues based albums ever. A wonderfully laid back journey through the pasts, present & future of the vibe they call the blues.
Opening with 'Dark as the night, Cold as the ground' the scene is set. One of atmospheric slide guitar driven, future blues with Deep South blues men's spoken word samples, sitting deep in the mix. Fans of Moby's experiments in this field should take note, as there are a lot of parallels in vibe. Hard grind Closes with 'Seek The Truth' which features most of Tackhead's players reunited on a frenetic and pinned down groove whilst the sadly passed honeyed vocal tones of Bim Sherman take the lead. Around all of this Sherwood weaves various atmospheres and virus's as only he can. So kick back, tune in & yes, drop out to the sound of blues for the 21st century.

Title : THERE SHALL BE LOVE
Artist : FUNDAMENTAL
Label : NATION RECORDS
Format : CD / LP
Following not so hotly on from 'Erotic Terrorism' and that E.P 'Why America Will Go To Hell'. 'There Shall Be Love' is a jaw dropper and a classic release. We all knew that Fundamental could be passionate, angry and energetic, but the audience will be amazed to see them convey it in this way and dare I say it with such love. Fundamental have hinted at it in the past with the 'Jahshataan' release and with their recent live shows but previous albums never held the listener so tightly as this.'There Shall Be Love' works on many different levels, the first being it’s production quality, tracks such as “Sunday school” and “Tagai Soul” and the opener, “The Last Gospel”, make the hairs stand up. 'There Shall Be Love' also acts as a musical travelogue of cultural resistance, if you look carefully and you will see traditional musicians from South Africa , Eastern Europe and the continent of Asia all intoning the same passionate plea alongside the passion and technology of the Fundamental crew.
Ethno punkologists they may well be and this is their greatest moment on record so far. The revolution may well not be televised but it has begun to be recorded.

Artist : SNUFF / SNUFF VS URBAN DUBTitle : BLUE GRAVY / BLUE GRAVY DUB VERSION
Label : TEN PAST TWELVE RECORDS
Format : CD
Blue Gravy :-
Punk / Rockers Snuffs latest album opens with the high octane power pop frenzy that is ‘Slipt’. A strong melodic vocal and guitar line underpins the frenzied outpourings, opening the album on a jubilant high. The following ‘Prisoners Abroad’ opens with some punching power chords and is backed up by horn bursts and a Peter Hook style distorted bassline. The title track ‘Blue Gravy’ comes over like a punk rock age private detective theme tune complete with horn section and Hammond organ lines. It’s been a long time since I paid any attention to new material of this ilk preferring to let the old school punks give me my distorted kicks but this album has certainly opened my eyes and I for one will be searching out more from Snuff’s back catalogue. For me Snuff’s sound works best when backed up by either the horn section or the ‘Hammond’ organ style lines. This lends them a very individual sound and sets them apart from the endless rock style dirge that led me away from this very genre orientated scene in the first place. If you love one hundred mile an hour melodic punk rock, if you loved early Stiff Little Fingers, Motorhead and Nirvana but want contemporary punk rock then Snuff are the band for you.
Blue Gravy Dub Versions :-
Bizarre shock of the week Snuff release a dub album, well not really more of an experimental remix project . I’m not sure who Snuff are aiming this very different and experimental album at. Blue Gravy Dub Versions features London’s Urban Dub radically reworking tracks from the original album. With a couple of the tunes getting more than one treatment.
‘Blue Gravy’ ( Burn Down Babylon Mix ) retains only the excellent horn lines for an Urban Dub remix extravaganza. Ichola Buddha not one of my favorite tunes from the original album comes up trumps here in the form of Ichola Dub. A speaker rocking deep sub bass mix bringing the Jubilant horns to the fore and mixing heavily effected snatches of the original vocals lines. Night Of The Versions is a five and a half min two step / garage ( !! ) reworking of ‘Night Of Li’s which uses the original guitar lines to great effect and places them in an entirely new setting.
Other highlights include ‘Northern Dub’ and the excellent ‘Emperor Dub’ which I’d like to see them do live. A wicked anthemic dub version complete with a heavily treated one drop riddim and a new horn parts. Also Night Of The Li’s ( Long Throw Specialist Mix ). Which sounds like the Mission Impossible theme tune mixed by King Tubby in a sleazy nightclub basement, surrounded by Ketamin fueled whores.
In my opinion Blue Gravy Dub Versions is an excellent album containing some awesome reversions of songs from the original album. It must be said though that this seems like an absolutely crazy project for a band whose fans are almost solely made up of straight ahead ( some would say blinkered ) punk rock fans. Blue Gravy Dub proves that Snuff are not afraid to be true to the original punk spirit and do what the fuck they want. For that they should be admired. Lets hope that this isn’t the end of Snuffs experimentation’s.

Title : NUCLEUS ROOTS
Label : PJP
Format : CD
Wonderfully uplifting modern conscious roots set firmly in the UK setting. Through the bands hard gigging schedule this album has already sold over six thousand copies and yet they still can’t secure a distribution deal here in the U. K. This album is currently being distributed outta France and imported back into the UK Crazy!!
The album affectionately known as ‘The Brown One’ opens with ‘One Good Night’ dealing with the broke pocket life of the U.K job seeker set to an uplifting riddim. The following ‘Fools Paradise’ with its bubbling keyboards, fanfaric horn lines drops heavy with the lyric dealing with the ‘Fools Paradise’ that is the life of the coke fueled gunman. ‘Still Here’ a definite highlight of their live shows provides balance in the lyrical department with its tale of survival against adversity set to an upful and jubilant riddim. The heavier dub workouts here are reserved for the albums final five tracks of which ‘Giving Dub’ and ‘Dreader Dub’ have a Tassilli Players feel, though with a little more earthiness . 'Tech Dub' is a bubbling horn led groove out. ‘Calling Dub’ features a wicked analogue acid b-line and ‘Militant Dub’ closes the album on an up tempo pull out the stops mode. An essential release which manages to capture most of the energy found at a Nucleus Roots live show, which in itself is some feat. Killer.

Title : IN DUB
Label : PJP
Format : CD'In Dub' Takes up from where 'The Brown One' left off. There is definitely evidence of advances in the bands production techniques since their last offering. Making for an even fuller and more rounded feel to their sound. ‘In Dub’ is an album of dub versions of songs that will feature on their forthcoming ‘Universal Love’ album which is due out in 2002. ‘Back Again Dub’ opens the album with an extended intro made up of skanking keys and horn lines setting the tone for the b-line to drop for a truly horizontal version of this favorite from their live set. Other highlights include ‘Long Road Dub’ with it’s Iration Steppas style digital b-line and vocal snatches ricocheting round the mix. Also the industrial strength one drop of ‘Tuned In Dub’. " You Are Tuned To The Mighty Sounds Of The Nucleus Roots Outernational, Do It Jah" !!

Title : NICK NORTHERN ( 2001 ) / DAMAGE IS DONE (2001) / NORTHERN DUB / DAMAGE DUB
Label : TEN PAST TWELVE RECORDS
Format : CD SINGLE
Snuff Vs UrbanDub Versions Cd single Punks links with reggae and dub, here in the UK dates back 25 years and is well documented. This tradition is continued with this single and the forthcoming Snuff remix album.
A four track e.p. featuring two cooking original band mixes and two mighty dub remixes from London digital dubsters ‘Urban Dub’. The original mix of ‘Nick Northern ( 2001 )’ is a fast paced Punk / Rocker complete with Hammond style keyboard lines and catchy horn section riffs. Along the lines of the ‘Blaggers ITA’ United Colours material. ‘Damage Is Done’ is a furious one minute and fifty one seconds mosh fest which I’m sure gets dangerous in the live situation. Tracks three and four is where Urban Dub come in with their remixes. ‘Northern Dub’ effects up snatches of the original vocal, adds a new dub bass line and is generally the more danceable of the remixes. ‘Damage Dub’ for a start is twice the length of the original and continues the trend of remixes being more like completely different tunes. ‘Damage Dub’ only retains very brief snatches of the vocal and horn parts and will work very well at Snuff's various live shows

Title : REACH OUT
Label : UNIVERSAL EGG
Format : CD
Sublime, tight and slick are three ways we could describe this latest product from Headmix. Everything from the sleeve artwork to the crystal clear production and even the presentation of the songs themselves, reeks of quality and professionalism. The tunes themselves feature lots of acoustic instrumentation under pinned by driving rhythms and enhanced by the likes of the Crispy Horns and produced by Al Scott known for his previous work with The Levellers.
It’s a cliché term but Headmix really are one of our hardest working live bands and an awesome spectacle to witness. Gigwise Headmix are still the fully rounded affair that we’ve come to know and love. On Reach Out though the vibe we’re dealing with is more pinned down and radio friendly.
Although at times a little too slick for my personal tastes this album is bound to bring in hordes of new fans both at home here in the UK and in their ventures further afield and well deserved they’ll be too.
Top Tune : Re - evolution
Opening with a spine tingling ‘Crispy Horns’ refrain. Re-evolution is the highlight of the album for this writer. Not least because of the awesome vocal harmonies and also the deeply infectious groove.Runner Up : This Nations Pride
The advent of more radio friendly push is tempered by Headmixs continued dedication to conscious lyricism. Never more apparent than on This Nations Pride. A song provoked by the death of Simon Jones who was killed on his first day of work as a casual worker with no training. This song is a reaction to the unwillingness of the authorities to take any action after Simon’s death. Any one wanting more info on this should visit www.simonjones.org.uk

Title : JOURNEYS INTO THE UNDERGROUND
Label : CONTINENTAL DRIFTS
Format : CD
The idea behind this double CD compilation is to introduce to new audiences the work of some of the hardest working and most ground breaking artists currently doing the rounds on our festival stages. With this in mind the only way to be true to the spirit of the thing is for me to attempt to deal with each act individually. So at thirty tracks and well over two hours of music ( phew ) here goes :-
CD1
MAX PASHM : Hebrew influenced dance beats and wicked hybrids. The sort of thing Real World / Womad should feature.
THE DANCE / DUB TENTNUCLEUS ROOTS : Having recently caught these guys at London’s Free The Weed festival. I can personally testify to their ability to move an audience. Quality stepping Roots Rocking Reggae to the fore.
KJ DUBS : Take TV evangelists , Dwane Eddy’s guitar, Elvis Presly on vocals, flamenco, scratch DJ’s mixed with drum and bass and techno beats and you'll get some sort of idea of where KJ Dubs are coming from, Kinda Norman Cook on GHB.
ISM : Full on industrial fat break-beat euphoria. A brimful of frenzyful - max strength - deliciousness.
ZION TRAIN : Need no introduction. On this one they return to the heavyweight dub sounds that we came to love them for.
DUBMERGE : Good time funk tinged reggae rap.
FUTURE LOOP FOUNDATION : Tek-step mutations with wicked double sub B-lines. This one will whip you up to a gibbering wreck. Just watch those pounds sweat off. Power driving Bristolian hard / Tek step frenzy.
MAD ETHICS : Multi-cultural hip-hop vibsters.
MANDRAGORA : Usher in their global beat / dance influenced psychedelic experience with Pollen the title track from their latest CD.
LE SUPERFLU : Blends of Hip-Hop, Blues and rock with a dash French panache.
RUBY THROAT : Strangely evolved punk meets dance meets mad funk with serge Lyonne on the mix.
BABYHEAD : Bristolian movie sound-track flavoured Hip-Hip.
EAST OF EALING : Innovative mixers of dance beats, harmonica, fiddle and the like. Sounding like a faster Afro - Celt Sound - system jamming with the Levellers. Lizard dancing abounds.
HOUSE OF RHYTHM : Hard-edged guitar driven funky groovyness.
SUNSHAKE : Slam Dunkin’ Techno battles with psychedelic geetar breaks and variety of other found sounds not usually associated with the four-four to the floor style.
CD2
TOP CATS : It’s a modern day Skatellites inspired Ska band. Complete with vibrant party-ful horn lines and solos. I for one can’t wait to catch them live.
FESTIVAL STAGEHEADMIX : Previously known as Head mix Collective . About this lot I have waxed lyrical in the past. This tune is lifted from their forthcoming CD and is sympathetically produced by Zion Train. Their previously under used vocal harmonies on this one come to the fore. A truly blissed-out affair. The mainstream beckons dare they resist.
MUKKA : Traditional eastern European and Arabic dance tunes. Sounds like Tragik Roundabout without the silliness.
PRONGHORN : Cow-punk hillbillies from deepest Dorset. These guys cram more twanginess and yee-hars into two and a half minuets than you’d think humanly possible. Making this delightful tune actually seem longer than it is.
COSMICS : Uplifting festival style contemporary reggae with respect to the music’s heritage. They have recently backed Lee Perry.
BAGHDADDIES : Finely honed festival veterans. A Baghdaddies gig is something you don’t forget. Blending eastern European gypsy songs with klezmer and pinned down grooves. This band have true international appeal.
KAKATSITSI : Traditional Ghanaian drummers and dancers. Now based in the U.K . A regular feature at festivals and raves.
TARANTISM : Acoustic street musicians currently being produced by Afro Celt Sound System. Here they provide us with a song dealing with the harsh reality’s of the life of a busker.
LIZZIE SEGAL : Melodic, atmospheric, spine chilling acoustic songstress. Lushness to the fore.
POOR RICH ONES : Scandinavian bred indie guitarness.
P.A.I.N : To say that P.A.I.N are the U.K ‘s number one Punk band is to do them an in justice. They are more than that. Mixing Dub and Ska and yes punk influences with some of the most coherent protest lyrics this side of Crass.
THE FISH BROTHERS : Hilarious Music Hall Punk. Brighton Breezy is their barbed ode to their home town. And bloody funny it is too.
TRAGIK ROUNDABOUT : Are the most positive parts of festival culture personified. With their carefree klezmer meets Ska-Punk. Massively popular with festival audiences everywhere.
INNER TERRESTRIALS : Their music ranges from upbeat Ska through dub, folk and world rhythm. This track brings to mind a contemporary version of The Ruts style reggae verses with Conflict style chorus’.
SEEDS OF CREATION : North African / middle eastern group incorporating Afro-Latin Jazz and Funk influences.
FLANNEL : The finest Anarcho-Rap-Punky-Funky-Pop songs you’re ever likely to hear. Complete with wah-wah geetars and groovy Hammond organ swells. Ooh er misses.
End Comment
Phew well that’s it a fuck of a lot of music with influences ranging from most parts of the globe. Which when you come to think of it, is what a festival is all about. A celebration of diversity togetherness and oneness. And this CD manages to capture that spirit brilliantly.

Title : HEADMIX LIVE
Label : HEADMIX
Format : CD
At last a chance for us to recreate the uniqueness that is a HMC gig in the comfort of our own home, space van, tent or bender ( delete where applicable ). Anyone having already expericened a Headmix gig will know what to expect. A festivalwise mixture of dub influenced jiggery pokery meets jumping skanked up grooves backing a message of looking after mother earth and respect for yourself and each other.
Songs lifted from prevoius recorded works are treated to jamdown style versioning. The most notable of which is ‘Duddle Uddle’. Of the new songs contained here a personal favourite would be Turkish Delight, The albums brillient closing tune.
An excellent CD which works as a perfect snapshot of one our hardest working bands getting on down.
Top Tune : Turkish Delight
The only studio cut tune here manages over seven minetes to visit most sub continents with its instrumentation of fiddles, horns, accordian and didge. This is all backed by a wicked driving and pinned down rythym. Awesome stuffRunner Up : Dodge Dub
"Check this tune, check this band check the nite check the land ". This the albums opening tune sets the scene perfectly for both this CD and a headmix gig.

Artist : BACK TO BASE / BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH
Title :HEADING FOR THE DOOR
Label : MPR
Format : CD
Opening with One Day a carefree groove contrasting well with Zephaniahs tale of soul searching. My all time favourite Back To Base / Benjamin Zephaniah collaboration Nu Suede Shoes recieves a radio friendly remix here. Other highlights include The President Is Dead Again Another collaborative peice with Benjamin Zephaniah dedicated to the memory of Ken Saro - Wiwa. Who was Judicially murdered by the Nigerian military regime in ’95 ( Lest We Forget ). A version of Back To Bases long-time live showpieceCrown Yourself King is also included hereand for this writer is the strongest of the tunes not to feature Zephaniah.
The tunes featuring Benjamin Zephaniah are sublime oral poetry backed by good mixture of live instruments and digital technology. In my opinion the latest instrumental stuff is a little too clinical and lacks a little soul. For myself this album shows that what Back To Base really need is a strong vocalist to back. When backing someone as strong as Benjamin Zephaniah, Back To Base really do excel.
Top Tune : Nu Blu Suede Shoes
The perfect blend of Back to Bases music and Benjamin Zephaniah lyric. A future classic for sure.Runner Up : The President Is Dead Again.
More BZ Dub Beat Poetry set to a strong yet subtle Back To Base rhythm.
